Sweet Dinner Rolls

This recipes makes a delicious, sweet dinner rolls that bakes up to a gorgeous golden brown color. By letting the rolls rise in the pan, they come out of the oven gently stuck together. They pull apart easily for a fun way to serve for kids and casual dinner guests.

Yields 14 to 18 rolls

Dough
1 pound 14 ounces (about 4 ½ cups) bread flour
2 teaspoons salt
2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast
In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and yeast with a dough whisk or wooden spoon.
2 cups warm water
Add water and mix with dough whisk or wooden spoon until combined into a rough dough. Turn out onto a clean work surface and knead for until soft and smooth, about 5 minutes.
Return dough to original bowl and let rest for 5 minutes.
⅔ cup sugar
3 tablespoon shortening
In a medium bowl, cream sugar with shortening using an electric hand mixer.
3 eggs
Beat in eggs, one at a time
14 ounces (about 2 cups) bread flour
Add flour to egg mixture and mix to combine. The mixture will be fairly sticky.
reserved dough
Tear the reserved dough into six small pieces and add to the bowl with the egg mixture. Using a wooden spoon, mix well to combine. At first the dough will be very sticky and may be hard to work with. Keep stirring, and if necessary, use your hands to mix.
additional flour, as needed
Add additional flour to dough until a rough ball forms.
Once combined, turn out onto a clean work surface and knead by hand until dough is smooth, about 5 to 10 minutes.
Rising
Place in a large greased bowl and cover tightly with plastic wrap. Let rise until doubled, about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Shaping
Preheat oven to 400°F.

Grease two 9 inch round cake pans.

Remove dough from bowl and roll out dough on a well floured surface until about 1 inch thick. Using a clean drinking glass or cookie cutter, cut out 14 to 18 circular rolls.
Place half of the cut outs in one cake pan and half in the other. Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rise until slightly puffy, about 15 minutes.
Baking
Bake at 400°F until rolls are golden brown, about 20 minutes.
Remove from oven and immediately remove rolls from pan and place on wire rack. Separate rolls and let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
