Misir Wot

This traditional Ethopian stew can be made quickly by cooking onion, garlic, ginger, lentils, and berbere in an instant pot. Berbere is a traditional Ethiopian spice that you can find at specialty markets or online.

Misir Wot
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • ½ inch ginger, coursely chopped
  • In a food processor, pulse ginger and garlic quickly about 10 times. Transfer to a bowl
  • 1 onion, chopped into chunks
  • Put onion chunks in now empty food processor and pulse until finely chopped, about 6 to 8 times.
  • Turn Instant Pot onto saute mode. Wait 1 minute to let it preheat.
  • 3 tablespoons butter or ghee
  • Add butter to instant pot and let melt.
  • reserved ginger-onion mixture
  • Add chopped ginger-onion mixture and saute until fragrant, about 30 seconds.

  • Add onions to pot and saute until fragrent as well, about 2 minutes.
  • 1 ½ tablespoons berbere seasoning
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • Add berbere and tomato paste. Stir well to combine.
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • 1 cup red lentils, rinsed
  • 1 teaspoon sea salt
  • Add water, red lentils, and salt to pot. Stir to combine.
  • Press 'cancel' on the Instant Pot and close the lid. Cook on High Pressure for 8 minutes. Release the pressure and serve with injera or naan.
