Orange Sugar & Spice Cookies
Samantha created this recipe. These festive, soft, chewy sugar cookies have a big kick of vanilla, almond, cloves, and orange. These are our family's new favorite cookies.

- Yields 2 dozen cookies
- 14 tablespoons (1 ¾ stick) butter, softened
- 1 ¼ cups sugar
- Cream butter. Gradually add sugar, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer.
- 1 egg, beaten
- ¼ cup light or dark corn syrup
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon almond extract
- ¼ teaspoon orange extract
- Add egg, corn syrup, vanilla, almond extract, and orange extract, to the creamed mixture and beat well.
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 tablespoon warm water
- Dissolve soda in water and then add into the creamed mixture. Mix well.
- 3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 scant teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon ground cloves
- In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and cloves. Then gradually add into creamed mixture, blending well.
- 1 tablespoon orange zest
- On a low mixer speed or by hand, stir in orange zest.
- Chill cookie dough for at least 2 hours.
- Shape chilled dough into 1-inch balls. (Note: if the dough is too hard to shape because of chilling, let it sit out on the counter for ½ hour to warm up and then shape into cookies.)
- Optional: 1/4-½ cup course, sprinkling sugar (can be in holiday colors)
- Press cookie down into sugar, so as to get a pressed layer of sugar. Place on baking sheets 1 ½ inches apart with the sugar sprinkles facing up.
- Bake cookies at 350°F for 12 to 15 minutes, or until lightly browned.
- Cool cookies on wire racks and enjoy!
